How to remove your personal information from Companies House

Companies House publishes information about limited companies and their directors on the public register. For directors, this usually includes your name, month and year of birth, service address and details of your current and previous appointments.

Some older documents contain more personal information than Companies House would normally display today.

If your home address, signature, full date of birth or occupation appears on an old filing, you may be able to have it removed from the public register.

What can you remove from Companies House?

You can apply to remove:

  • your home address, or part of it
  • your signature
  • the day from your date of birth
  • your business occupation

The date of birth rule only applies to documents filed before 10 October 2015. The month and year will still remain on the public record.

The rules were widened in July 2025. Before that, the main focus was on residential addresses. You can now also apply to remove signatures, occupations and the day of birth from older documents.

Removing your home address

This is probably the most common reason to apply, for obvious reasons.

A home address may have appeared on an old filing because it was used as:

  • your director’s service address
  • the company’s registered office
  • another address included on an older Companies House document

If the address is still your company’s current registered office, you need to change it first.

See our guide to changing or choosing a company registered office.

The same principle applies if you still use your home as your director’s service address. You will normally need another service address to appear on the public register instead.

If you use the address as the company’s SAIL address, you also need to change it before you make the application.

How do you apply?

For a UK company, you normally use form SR01.

Before filling it in, find your company on the Companies House register and go through the filing history.

You need to identify each document which contains the information you want removed.

This is important because Companies House charges £34 for each document.

So if your old home address appears on five documents, the fee would be £170.

The form asks for details including:

  • your name and any former names
  • your date of birth
  • the information you want removed
  • the relevant company details
  • the document type and registration date
  • a replacement service address, where necessary

If your home address was previously the registered office, you need to list the original filing which introduced that address, rather than a later filing which changed it to a different address.

Companies House says it can reject an application if you select the wrong document.

Will the application appear on your company’s filing history?

An SR01 application is not a normal company filing, such as a confirmation statement or change of registered office. Companies House describes it as an application by an individual to remove personal information from documents which are already on the public register.

The original filing does not disappear from the company’s filing history. Instead, the personal information is removed or suppressed from the public version of the document.

Companies House does not state in its SR01 guidance that a separate filing-history entry is created to announce that you have applied. So someone searching the company should not see a new entry simply saying that a director has asked for personal information to be removed.

Can you remove your full date of birth?

No, this isn’t possible. You can remove the day, but not the month and year.

For example, an older filing showing:

14 March 1975

could be altered so that the public version no longer shows the 14.

This only applies to documents filed before 10 October 2015, as after that date the registrar no longer listed directors’ days of birth on the public register.

Can you remove your signature?

Yes, you can also suppress a signature that appears on an eligible historical document.

This is particularly relevant to older paper forms which were signed by hand and later scanned onto the Companies House register.

Can you remove your occupation?

In some cases, you can remove your occupation if it appears on an eligible Companies House document, but this is more common in older filings.

Are there documents Companies House will not alter?

Yes, don’t assume that you can change every document which contains personal information.

Companies House says you can remove personal information from most eligible documents, but mortgage documents are excluded. Certain information contained in deeds, debentures and charges may also remain public.

Nor is there a general right to wipe your history as a director from Companies House.

The register is intended to provide a public record of UK companies and the people involved with them.

What if the information is wrong or was filed without your permission?

If someone has filed false information, used your details without authority, or submitted a document that does not reflect what actually happened, Companies House has separate procedures in place for challenging the filing.

That is different from suppressing legitimate personal information.

It is also worth considering joining the Companies House PROOF scheme, which can help prevent certain paper filings being made without authorisation.

What if you are at risk of violence or intimidation?

There are stronger protections where your association with a company puts you, or somebody living with you, at serious risk of violence or intimidation.

Directors, LLP members and people with significant control may be able to protect their home address from disclosure to credit reference agencies.

In more serious cases, a PSC can apply to have all their PSC information protected from public disclosure.

This is a separate process from the normal SR01 application, and you will usually need evidence of the risk.

Will removing it from Companies House remove it from Google?

Not necessarily, as company information is copied by company-information websites, credit reference agencies and other commercial databases.

If a third-party website already holds an old copy of the information, changing the Companies House record will not necessarily make that copy disappear immediately.

You may need to approach the website concerned separately.

Avoid putting your home address on the register in the first place

It is much easier to keep an address off the public register than to remove it later.

How much does it cost to remove information?

The current Companies House fee is £34 per document, which can make a seemingly simple clean-up surprisingly expensive.

If the same old home address appears on eight separate filings, for example, removing it from all of them would cost £272.

That makes it worth checking the full filing history first. You may find that only one or two documents could cause privacy issues, while others are less important.
